The Risks With Following A Keto Diet

The ketogenic diet, or simply known as the Keto diet, has recently become quite a popular form of dieting. Those who strictly follow this diet are known to effectively lose weight in a short period of time. While it may be what most people want, a keto diet may also come with certain risks that makes it a not-so-ideal choice for some people. Here are some of the considered risks behind following a keto diet.

Ketoacidosis

When on a keto diet, the body goes through a process of ketosis, which happens when the body starts to burn body fat for fuel and energy. While it can be beneficial if properly managed, this can sometimes lead to a condition known as ketoacidosis. This happens when the body starts to store too much ketones, which is a byproduct of burning fat. This can lead to the blood becoming more acidic, evenutally causing damage to the brain, liver, and kidneys.

Less Muscle Mass

While a keto diet may lead to weight loss, it may be a result of losing muscle mass. This can happen with prolonged keto dieting. This can lead to a worse scenario when a person starts to regain the weight lost after stopping the keto diet. The proportions between fat and muscle changes as people are more likely to regain fat faster than lean muscle. As a consequence, losing weight on the next keto dieting period will prove to become more difficult.

Increased Heart Disease Risk

Since the keto diet is based on consuming high fats and protein, there is the risk of increased cholesterol levels. This may have an effect on heart health, especially if one is not careful of the type of fats they consume when under a keto diet.
