Warming Up Before Doing Exercise

warm up exerciseThe definition of a warm-up is a gradual increase of intensity in the activity of certain muscles, joints and parts of the body which will be essentially used. For example, in a soccer match, a player might warm up by slowly jogging to warm up the muscles and to speed up the heart rate. What this does is it prepares the different muscles for a particular exercise or range of motion.

It is very important that the warm up exercise that a person does is relevant to the activity that he or she will be doing. The whole point of warming up is to prepare the muscles that will be used in a few moments.

Warming up has three phases:

The first one is the raising of the heart rate, which essentially means an increase of the speed of the movement of oxygen to the muscles, thus enabling these muscles to be reused each and every time.

The second phase includes the exercises for mobility or stretching exercises. These stretches should enable the muscles to go within their full range of motion. Examples for this kind of exercise includes lunges and squat thrusts.

The last part of the warm up should include a skill-related element. This means that if the person’s sport is basketball, then he or she should practice passing the ball or going for a lay up. This will enable the neuromuscular operations to kick in and become familiar with the fact that this type of physical motion will be practiced for the whole duration of the activity.

Benefits of warming up

Warming up effectively improves a person’s workout by doing several things. Warming up releases adrenaline which will be able to make the person perform better. It will essentially increase a person’s heart rate which is good for any intense physical activity.

With regard to blood circulation, it will enable the oxygen in the blood to cross at a much faster rate. Not only will it enable the oxygen to travel faster but it will also allow the oxygen in the blood to travel with a much larger volume. It also decreases the density of blood. It also enables greater elasticity of a person’s muscle fibers and supplies energy through the breakdown of oxygen.

The benefits of warming up are directly related to the activities and movement that one does when participating in a sport or before engaging in a strenuous workout. It is important that a person will take advantage of the different benefits that are available to him or her because of warming up.

It is only prudent for a person to take care in not damaging any muscles or tissues by not warming up. If a person does not warm up, the likelihood of injury is not far off since there is a possibility that the muscle tissue could not be ready for a sudden increase of activity.
