Things That Can Affect Your Blood Pressure Readings

Your blood pressure levels can be an indication of your health. When your blood pressure reading is elevated, you eventually begin to develop serious health conditions. Getting that normal blood pressure reading can require changing bad habits, reducing stress, and following a healthy lifestyle. There are also other things that may have an effect on your blood pressure reading. Here are some of them.

Your meal yesterday

When you are surprised that you have an elevated blood pressure reading at the start of your day, there is no need to be stressed out. There are factors that may have contributed to this. One of them is the last meal you may have taken the day before. If you have eaten a meal with a high salt-content the night before, it can lead to higher blood pressure readings the next day. If you need the blood pressure readings for your physical exam, then avoiding salt on your meals will help bring that down.

How hydrated you are

Your blood pressure reading an also be affected if you are dehydrated. If the cells in your body lack water, the brain sends out signals that trigger your body to produce a certain chemical called vasopressin. It constricts your blood vessels that will lead to elevated blood pressure readings.  Staying hydrated can help lower it. Try to make sure that you are sufficiently hydrated before you have your blood pressure taken.

Having a stressful commute

You may not know it but your daily commute may be the reason why your blood pressure may be high. From the traffic that you encounter up to the rush when taking the public transport, the stress can make your blood pressure go up. If you have to take your blood pressure reading, make sure that you take some time to rest for a while to calm down and lower your blood pressure. At least 5 minutes of rest will be enough.
