One reason is that processing them may require the addition of ingredients that may either be harmful for our bodies or too much for our daily consumption. In order to continue eating healthy, people may need to reduce their consumption of processed food and consider the alternatives instead. Here are some ideal alternatives available to help you substitute for many of the processed products we normally consume.

Sweet Alternatives

Added sugar has become a primary ingredient in many processed foods in order to make them irresistible. Many processed foods rely on our sweet tooth. That is why many of them contain high amounts of sugar in different forms, which are usually more than the recommended daily allowance. Many processed foods may contain granulated sugar, high fructose syrup, corn sugar, or brown sugar as ingredients. In order to avoid them and yet still address your cravings for sweets, you can try healthier alternatives instead. It is healthier to consume naturally sweet foods such as fruits, honey, natural peanut butter and even some peppers.

Baked Goodies

One of the more irresistible treats that can affect your healthy eating habit includes baked goods such as cakes, doughnuts, pastries and cookies. Most of those ready-made baked goodies may contain more empty calories, simple carbohydrates as well as high amounts of sugar. The best alternative is to create your own baked goodies such as homemade cookies and bars using whole grains and adding less sugar or unhealthy fats.

Dairy Fat Alternatives

Many processed foods in the market also contain dairy fat as an ingredient. Examples are ice cream, whole milk and cream cheese. While not totally unhealthy, consuming them in large amounts can contribute to weight gain. As a healthier alternative, consider eating low-fat versions of dairy fat products such as skim milk or low-fat cheeses.

Processed Carbohydrate Alternatives

One of the culprits of making processed foods unhealthy is the processed carbohydrates they contain. Processed carbs are associated with poor heart health and weight gain. It is healthier to avoid eating too much white bread, snack cakes, processed potatoes, rice, pancakes and similar processed products. Better and healthier alternatives include eating similar products but contain whole grains as a main ingredient.

Processed Meats

Processed meats such as ham, bacon, pepperoni, hot dogs and more have been associated with poor health. Preservatives and other ingredients used into making these processed meats may make them unhealthy. It is better to consume protein alternatives such as fish, skinless chicken, whole grains, nuts, and soybeans to maintain a healthy eating habit.
